  2. EUDORA FOR WINDOWS, VERSION 5.0.2 -- RELEASE NOTES
  3. ===================================================

  5. This document describes the changes in the software since Eudora
  6. 4.3.2.  A separate section has been given to changes in 5.0.  
  7. For new feature descriptions, see Whatsnew.pdf and Readme.txt.

  14. Fixed a crash at startup or shutdown which related to displaying
  15. your toolbar ad.

  22. NOTE:  Several times we refer to <x-eudora-option:...> to modify a
  23. setting.  Copy the whole text including the < >'s and paste it into
  24. a new Eudora message.  By press and holding down the <alt> key, you 
  25. can click on a URL in a new message (a hand will display over the URL
  26. which means it can be used).
  27.  
  28. COMPOSING/VIEWING MAIL
  29. ----------------------
  30. Fixed conflict where changing the Message Font in Eudora would also 
  31. change the font in Internet Explorer.  You need to use this URL 
  32. <x-Eudora-option:SeparateMSHTMLSettings=1> to set it to 1 to resolve 
  33. this conflict.  As a default, it is 0 because we need to be careful 
  34. about unknown side effects.  There is a known problem where printing
  35. email messages will still be printed using the browser's font size.
  36.  
  37. Fixed freeze when clicking on a URL.  This related to our using DDE 
  38. to check to see if Netscape is running.  If you use Netscape, then 
  39. previous to this fix clicking on a URL in Eudora would have reused an 
  40. existing Netscape browser window.  After the fix, clicking on a URL 
  41. in Eudora will open a new Netscape browser window.  If you are using 
  42. Netscape as your browser and would like clicking on URL's in Eudora 
  43. to reuse an existing browser window, then use this URL: 
  44. <x-Eudora-option:NetscapeURLDDE=1>.
  45.  
  46. Fixed crash when auto-completion was not using the address book for 
  47. its list.
  48.  
  49. Fixed sudden cascading repainting problem when switching from having
  50. a vertical scrollbar and not having one.  This was common in the
  51. composition window.
  52.  
  53. Fixed problem where Help-Insert System Configuration would fail 
  54. because it could not find your Attach directory.
  55.  
  56. Canceling a forward/redirect that had added Insert System 
  57. Configuration files will no longer lose attachments.
  58.  
  59. Fixed situation where URL's would get an orange highlight if another 
  60. style is present in the inline signature.
  61.  
  62. Fix for Guninski security hole where launching a file that uses a
  63. previously sent rogue DLL would have unexpected results.
  64.  
  65. Caret displays in the correct field after a mailto.
  66.  
  67. We no longer scroll two lines at the bottom of the message.
  68.  
  69. Hyperlinks are no longer broken by a spelling error.
  70.  
  71. Fixed a bug where sending out plain text with a large word on a line
  72. in an excerpt caused the wrapping to occur at the space after it.
  73. The bad result would be extra spaces in front of the > for excerpts.
  74.  
  75. Tab in body now works when using Help-Report a bug.
  76.  
  77. <x-Eudora-option:AllowClipboardHTML> allows for the user to have a
  78. normal paste use HTML format.  The current default is off, but this
  79. might change in the future.
  80.  
  81. MOODWATCH
  82. ---------
  83. Fixed a crash in MoodWatch when queuing/sending a message while the 
  84. user has WordWrapOnScreen enabled.
  85.  
  86. Moodwatch column no longer displays if this feature is disabled in
  87. Tools-Options-Mailboxes-MoodWatch.
  88.  
  89. Improvements with background MoodWatch which occurs when you open a
  90. mailbox that has not been MoodWatch'ed yet.
  91.  
  92. STATIONERY/SIGNATURES
  93. ---------------------
  94. A horizontal bar has been added between your text body and your 
  95. in-line signature.  Note that it will not be present in the received
  96. message.  This will help distinguish from the body of the message and
  97. the inline signature.  Note that if you modify/add text below the 
  98. horizontal line, then it assumes that you are modifying the signature.
  99. As a result, if you change signatures, then the modified text will be
  100. lost.
  101.  
  102. Stationery files no longer have a limitation of 63488 bytes.
  103.  
  104. SENDING/CHECKING/FILTERING MAIL
  105. -------------------------------
  106. Fixed incorrect mail being printed from the mailbox TOC while the 
  107. preview pane is hidden.
  108.  
  109. We now have a new INI setting for controlling filtering of incoming 
  110. messages in POP and IMAP.  This can be specified per personality.
  111. The setting is FilterIncomingMail.  Here are your options that you set
  112. for each personality (you have to manually edit your Eudora.ini file):
  113. FilterIncomingMail=0 --> no filtering at all (server side or other)
  114. FilterIncomingMail=1 --> Complete filtering turned on (default)
  115. FilterIncomingMail=2 --> Advanced filtering, IMAP server side only.
  116.  
  117. Manual filtering will still be allowed regardless of the setting.
  118.  
  119. FIND TEXT/MESSAGES
  120. ------------------
  121. Fixed crash in Find Messages when it encountered a message without
  122. any headers.
  123.  
  124. Find Text has been enabled for Filters.  Use ctrl-shift-f to initiate 
  125. the Find Text dialog while the focus is in the list of the filters in
  126. the left pane of the Filters window.  
  127.  
  128. Notes on Find Text for Filters:
  129. - It starts its search after the filter in focus.
  130. - The search will wrap around the end of the list and continue from
  131. the top of the list.
  132.  
  133. Find Text now supported for File-New and Signature windows.  The focus
  134. must be in the window that you are searching.
  135.  
  136. MAILBOXES
  137. ---------
  138. Mailbox TOC status icons are now transparent.
  139.  
  140. When prompted to rebuild a mailbox, we place a stronger emphasis on
  141. rebuilding the TOC index file.
  142.  
  143. ADDRESS BOOK/DIRECTORY SERVICES
  144. -------------------------------
  145. Fixed crash with the Address Book when removing a recipient.
  146.  
  147. Fixed "swap" button problem with "Make Address Book Entry..." where 
  148. it would reset the email address field every time you clicked on 
  149. "swap".
  150.  
  151. Fixed the inability to change the email address when using 
  152. Special-Make Address Book Entry... (ctrl-k)
  153.  
  154. In the Address book, selecting some email addresses and Make Address
  155. Book Entry will now retain the Full name field.
  156.  
  157. Fixed some UI issues with the Address Book.

  159. Address book can be exported to CSV.

  161. UI improvements for Directory Services.

  163. STATISTICS
  164. ----------
  165. Sent attachments are now counted in Statistics despite 
  166. WarnQueueBigMessage=0.
  167.  
  168. IMAP
  169. ----
  170. Fixed the inability to select an IMAP folder in Filter's Transfer to 
  171. action.  The problem occurred if the IMAP folder contained any 
  172. mailboxes.  Note that the "This Mailbox" selection will only be 
  173. available if you can transfer mail to the mailbox/folder.
  174.  
  175. Fixed problem where IMAP embedded images would get lost if transferred
  176. to a local mailbox or viceversa.
  177.  
  178. IMAP mailboxes can now be sorted by server status.
  179.  
  180. You can now make a toolbar button for transferring messages to an
  181. IMAP mailbox.
  182.  
  183. Fixed problem with IMAP transferring into the same mailbox would cause
  184. it to be marked for deletion without keeping a copy.
  185.  
  186. IMPORTING
  187. ---------
  188. Fixed importing WAB and MAPI address books which used expand to 
  189. addresses.
  190.  
  191. Improvements to OE5 dbx file importing.
  192.  
  193. Importing from Outlook Express WAB shows the first names now.
  194.  
  195. MISCELLANEOUS
  196. -------------
  197. Improved Netscape's interaction with Eudora where "Send Page" would 
  198. cause Netscape to crash.  There still might be some systems where this
  199. problem persists.
  200.  
  201. Fixed problem where Eudora would not be used in Netscape even though 
  202. Eudora is the default mailer.
  203.  
  204. Fixed registration problem where Eudora would startup in a different
  205. mode even though you were previously in Paid Mode.
  206.  
  207. Fixed esoteric plugin showing double options in Tools-Options.  
  208. esoteric.epi needs to be copied from your extrastuff directory and to 
  209. your main Eudora directory.
  210.  
  211. Toolbar ad should now show up.
  212.  
  213. Toolbar ad image should be retained after system colors have changed.
  214.  
  215. <x-Eudora-option:OptionsHideCursor> controls whether or not the cursor
  216. gets temporarily hidden when switching categories in the Tools-Options
  217. dialog.  The default is enabled.

  219. Improved synching with Palm conduit and large messages.

  225.  
  226. COMPOSING/VIEWING MAIL
  227. ======================
  228. Fixed a bug where deleting an open message from the preview pane 
  229. would cause Eudora to crash. 
  230.  
  231. Fixed a couple of bugs in displaying messages that contain URLs where 
  232. www or ftp is preceded by other alphanumeric characters. The message 
  233. could take a long time to display, and Eudora would hang if the URL 
  234. was invalid.
  235.  
  236. Fixed a crash in composition windows containing hyperlinks.
  237.  
  238. Fixed a bug that could cause the caret (blinking cursor) to appear
  239. in the wrong window after a new composition window was opened.
  240.  
  241. Fixed a bug where editing a queued message that you had previously 
  242. set to be sent at a certain would cause the message to instead be 
  243. sent on the next send-messages operation.
  244.  
  245. Fixed a bug where copying HTML (e.g., from a browser) to the clipboard
  246. and then pasting it into Eudora would introduce strange characters and
  247. other problems. This fix applies only if you Edit/Paste Special in
  248. Eudora and then choose HTML Format in the dialog that comes up.
  249.  
  250. Fixed a bug where Eudora would crash when previewing a text/enriched
  251. message that contained a font change.
  252.  
  253. Fixed a bug where, if Eudora was not the default mailer, clicking on
  254. a mailto: link in Netscape would still open a composition window in
  255. Eudora.
  256.  
  257. Fixed a bug where clicking on Reply To, Reply All, or Forward in the
  258. Netscape Messenger news reader would open a composition window in
  259. Eudora.
  260.  
  261. Eudora now makes itself the handler for mailto: links in Netscape if
  262. any of the following conditions holds:
  263. - The registry entry for mailto
  264.   (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command) points to Eudora.
  265. - The user answers Yes to the warning that pops up if Eudora is
  266.   not configured as the default mailer.
  267. - If the settings DefaultMailto=1 and WarnDefaultMailto=0 are both
  268.   present. By default, DefaultMailto is 0, meaning Eudora doesn't
  269.   automatically make itself the default mailer, and WarnDefaultMailto
  270.   is 1, meaning Eudora puts up the aforementioned warning if it's
  271.   not the default mailer when it's launched.
  272.  
  273. Added .shb and .shs to the list of attachment extensions that cause
  274. a warning upon opening the attachment.
  275.  
  276. Nickname expansion is now done in the Cc: and Bcc: headers as well as 
  277. the To: header. 
  278.  
  279. Fixed a bug where inserting a horizontal line in a message could 
  280. cause the line to be drawn through a line of text.
  281.  
  282. Fixed a bug where a new reply or forward window would sometimes 
  283. scroll all the way to the end of the message.
  284.  
  285. Added Print One to the File menu. This prints one copy of the current 
  286. document to the default printer without displaying the standard print 
  287. dialog. 
  288.  
  289. Fixed a bug where excerpt bars didn't appear correctly in Microsoft 
  290. Outlook and Outlook Express in messages sent from Eudora.
  291.  
  292. Added more descriptive operating system versions in the text 
  293. generated by Help/Insert System Configuration. It also now correctly 
  294. identifies the more recent levels of Intel CPUs.
  295.  
  296. Fixed a bug in Auto-completion name deletion.
  297.  
  298. Print Preview is now supported for the Microsoft viewer if Internet 
  299. Explorer 5.5 or above is installed. Also, Print Preview is now 
  300. enabled when the focus is in a mailbox summary and one message is 
  301. selected. 
  302.  
  303. Fixed a bug where font changes made in Tools/Options/Fonts weren't 
  304. taking effect if Tools/Options/Viewing Mail/Use Microsoft's Viewer 
  305. was checked and Internet Explorer 5.5 was installed.
  306.  
  307. Removed Winsock information from the Help/Insert System Configuration 
  308. text, and added the mode (Paid, Sponsored, or Light).
  309.  
  310. Now putting the version number and current mode in the Subject header
  311. of Help/Report A Bug messages. 
  312.  
  313. Fixed a bug in the way messages were encoded if BinHex encoding was
  314. selected.
  315.  
  316. The Tools/Options dialog has a new panel for Composing Mail. Some
  317. settings were moved to this panel from the Sending Mail panel.
  318.  
  319. MOODWATCH
  320. =========
  321. Still more refinement as to which words and phrases do and don't
  322. trigger MoodWatch chilies.
  323.  
  324. STATIONERY/SIGNATURES
  325. =====================
  326. Fixed a bug where signatures were losing their styles when viewed
  327. inline.
  328.  
  329. Inserting an image in a signature or stationery is disallowed for 
  330. now, since it wasn't working right and could cause a crash.
  331.  
  332. Fixed a bug where dynamic menus, such as the stationery menu, failed 
  333. to wrap. For example, if you had a whole lot of stationery, you 
  334. wouldn't be able to see all of it in the menu.
  335.  
  336. Fixed a bug where any message containing a signature was treated as if
  337. it had styled text.
  338.  
  339. SENDING/CHECKING/FILTERING MAIL
  340. ===============================
  341. Fixed a bug that could cause Eudora to crash while downloading a 
  342. message from a POP server.
  343.  
  344. Fixed a crash in the Filters window.
  345.  
  346. Fixed a bug that was preventing Eudora from recognizing that a POP
  347. server has the MANGLE capability. (This allows the server to return
  348. a more useful summary of the message's content, including attachments,
  349. in cases where the message isn't downloaded in its entirety.) To fix
  350. the problem you need to use this URL: <x-Eudora-option:UsePOPMangle=1>
  351. QUALCOMM's Qpopper 3 is an example of a POP server with MANGLE 
  352. capability.
  353.  
  354. Fixed a memory leak upon sending a message.
  355.  
  356. Turbo Redirect no longer works in filters. Formerly, it caused 
  357. crashes.
  358.  
  359. Fixed a bug where the Filter Report window would lose its column 
  360. headers and mess up the data if it got new reports in to it without 
  361. first being viewed.
  362.  
  363. Fixed a couple of bugs in the handling of .msg files specified on the
  364. Eudora command line. No message was being sent if the path of the
  365. .msg file contained any spaces, even it was enclosed in quotes.
  366. Also, a signature is now included only if the .msg file contains an
  367. X-Eudora-signature header.
  368.  
  369. FIND TEXT/MESSAGES
  370. ==================
  371. Fixed a bug where Find Messages and Find Text were disabled when the 
  372. focus was in the message preview pane.
  373.  
  374. Fixed a bug where Find Messages would show the wrong results when 
  375. searching by message priority.
  376.  
  377. MAILBOXES
  378. =========
  379. Data in the Size column of a mailbox summary is now right-justified. 
  380.  
  381. ADDRESS BOOK/DIRECTORY SERVICES
  382. ===============================
  383. Fixed a crash that could occur upon removing an address from the 
  384. recipient list with the address book loaded. 
  385.  
  386. Removed obsolete LDAP servers from the Directory Services defaults, 
  387. and changed the default Ph server to ns.eudora.com (which might not 
  388. be available for a few days).
  389.  
  390. IMAP
  391. ====
  392. Fixed a bug where dragging a message with an attachment from a POP
  393. mailbox to an IMAP mailbox would lose the attachment if the attachment
  394. directory was no longer the default one.
  395.  
  396. Fixed a bug where users of some IMAP servers could not download any
  397. messages because the server sent null characters in response to
  398. certain IMAP commands.
  399.  
  400. Fixed a bug where copying a message from the Out mailbox to an IMAP 
  401. mailbox would change the time of the message.
  402.  
  403. Fixed a bug where FCC'd messages in IMAP mailboxes showed incorrect 
  404. times.
  405.  
  406. The Delete option is now grayed out for IMAP email that's already 
  407. marked for removal. 
  408.  
  409. Directory names containing commas will now show up in IMAP.
  410.  
  411. Fixed a bug in the IMAP internal message cache.
  412.  
  413. Worked around for a non-standard attachment-related behavior exhibited
  414. by certain IMAP servers.
  415.  
  416. A Resynchronize method was added to the IEuFolder Automation
  417. interface. This method will resynchronize any given IMAP folder.
  418.  
  419. IMPORTING
  420. =========
  421. Fixed a bug that caused some Outlook 2000 address books to not be
  422. imported into Eudora.
  423.  
  424. Added support for importing from multiple Outlook Express identities.
  425.  
  426. Fixed a bug with importing some Outlook Express mailboxes created on
  427. non-English-language versions of Windows. 
  428.  
  429. Corrected some warnings in the Windows address book import.
  430.  
  431. Improved the File/Import user interface. Most notably, there's now an 
  432. Advanced button that takes you to a dialog where you can directly 
  433. specify the files to be imported.
  434.  
  435. MISCELLANEOUS
  436. =============
  437. Fixed a crash that occurred in the course of Kerberos authentication.
  438.  
  439. Fixed a crash that could occur upon creating a new personality.
  440.  
  441. Fixed a crash that could occur when you clicked on an ad in
  442. Sponsored mode.
  443.  
  444. Fixed a bug where a task could hang around in the Task Status window 
  445. and never go away, if the timing was just right. 
  446.  
  447. Fixed a bug where launching Netscape 4.74 while Eudora is running 
  448. would freeze Eudora.
  449.  
  450. Fixed a bug where an empty window could display at startup. It was
  451. supposed to be a notice about a newer version of Eudora, but no text
  452. was in the window.
  453.  
  454. Fixed a bug where Eudora would use the CPU heavily for about 60
  455. seconds on startup.
  456.  
  457. Newer versions of some system DLLs are installed:
  458. Mfc42.dll: 6.00.8447.0
  459. Msvcirt.dll: 6.00.8168.0
  460. Msvcp60.dll: 6.00.8168.0 (instead of Msvcp50.dll)
  461. Msvcrt.dll: 6.00.8397.0
  462. Consequently, a restart of Windows may be necessary after you install
  463. Eudora. The installer will offer to do this for you if this is the
  464. case.  If you use Windows NT or 2000, then you will need to have
  465. Administrator rights to install this program.
  466.  
  467. Fixed a bug where a great many spurious toolbar entries would 
  468. sometimes accumulate in Eudora.ini, causing a noticeable degradation
  469. in Eudora's responsiveness.
  470.  
  471. The size of an .mbx file (mailbox) file is now stored in the 
  472. corresponding .toc (table of contents) file, so that if the .mbx file 
  473. changes without Eudora's knowledge, we can detect it and avoid losing 
  474. mail from the mailbox. In particular, this avoids a nasty problem 
  475. that would arise when Norton AntiVirus 2000 would "quarantine" a .mbx 
  476. file; if the user subsequently moved the .mbx file back to its
  477. original location in the Eudora folder, all of the messages in that
  478. mailbox would be lost.
  479.  
  480. Finished fixing continuation of outgoing file changes after Eudora
  481. has been quit and reopened.
  482.  
  483. Eudora.exe is now about one megabyte smaller than before.
  484.  
  485. Fixed a tip of the day formatting problem.
  486.  
  487. Further refined the way Eudora determines the folder in which to keep
  488. its data. The exact process is described in Readme.txt under EUDORA
  489. AND WINDOWS 2000.
  490.  
  491. The Tools/Options dialog no longer shows categories for unavailable 
  492. features in Light mode. 
  493.  
  494. Fixed a bug where the Sponsored, Paid, and Light mode buttons in the 
  495. Payment & Registration dialog didn't have their background color the 
  496. same as the system dialog background color. You would notice it if 
  497. your system color scheme didn't use the standard light gray color for 
  498. the dialog background. 
  499.  
  500. Fixed some resource leaks. 
  501.  
  502. Eudora now works with released versions of Netscape up through 4.75, 
  503. as well as Netscape 6 Preview Release 1 and 2. 
  504.  
  505. Improved the appearance of the Directory Services and Filters windows
  506. at lower screen resolution.
  507.  
  508. Updated the Auto-completion panel in the Tools/Options dialog.
  509.  
  510. Fixed the tab order of the AutoCompletion panel of the Options 
  511. dialog, and added a checkbox for including nicknames generated by 
  512. plugins such as ESP. (The corresponding Eudora.ini setting is 
  513. DoPluginCompletion.)
  514.  
  515. The signatures, stationery, personalities, address book, task status, 
  516. task errors, filter report, file browser, and directory services
  517. windows, and the mailbox, transfer, stationery, recipient list,
  518. personality, and plugin menus are now loaded when first used, rather
  519. than at startup.
  520.  
  521. Changed the main window caption from "Eudora Email" back to "Eudora".
  522.  
  523. Fixed a bug where the Task Status and Task Errors windows could fail
  524. to display everything they should have.
  525.  
  526. Fixed a bug where Eudora wasn't setting itself as the default mail 
  527. program in the Internet Options of the Control Panel. 
  528.  
  529. Fixed a bug where Eudora would start to check for a newer version
  530. every time it started up if it was in fact the newest version.
  531.  
  532. The content of Eudora message windows is now accessible by other
  533. applications, via a subset of the Windows EDIT/RICHEDIT messages plus
  534. standard text-oriented Windows messages such as WM_COPY. The window
  535. class name is EudoraEdit.
  536.  
  537. Edit/Copy now works in the Link History window.
  538.  
  539. Reworded some items in the Profile & Registration dialog. You can now 
  540. change your registration if you've already registered. Also fixed the 
  541. tab order in that dialog.
  542.  
  543. The profile "nag" dialog is now centered in the main window. 
  544.  
  545. The ad window no longer has a close box when it's floating. 
  546.  
  547.  
  548. -------------------------
  549. NEW EUDORA.INI SETTINGS
  550. -------------------------
  551.  
  552. This section describes the new parameters that are available in the
  553. [Settings] section of Eudora.ini in Eudora 5.0. For each setting, its
  554. default value is shown to the right of its name. If the setting isn't
  555. present, Eudora will behave as if it's present with the default value
  556. specified.
  557.  
  558. You can add or change these settings without directly editing your
  559. Eudora.ini file by using the x-Eudora-option "hyperlink". For example,
  560. to set the value of the OfflineLinkAction setting to 1, you would:
  561. - Create a new message
  562. - Type <x-Eudora-option:OfflineLinkAction=1> into the message
  563. - Hold down the Alt key and click on that link
  564. - Click OK in the dialog that comes up.
  565.  
  566. The new settings follow.
  567.  
  568. BackupStatisticsDaily    0
  569. If this is set to 1, a backup copy of the Statistics data is made
  570. each day in the Eudora data directory. The name of the file is
  571. Stats<month>-<day>.xml, where <month> and <day> are replaced by the
  572. current month and day. For example, on September 7 it would be called
  573. Stats9-7.xml.
  574.  
  575. ConnectionStatusCacheTime    2000
  576. How long to wait between checks of the Internet connection status, in
  577. milliseconds. On some systems these checks take a long time, so if
  578. Eudora is running very slowly and/or using a lot of CPU time,
  579. increasing this value may help.
  580.  
  581. DisableStatistics    0
  582. If this is set to 1, no Statistics data is saved.
  583.  
  584. DoPluginCompletion    1
  585. Indicates whether to include nicknames generated by ESP (and
  586. potentially by other Eudora plugins) in the Auto-Completion list. A
  587. value of 1 means to include them, and a value of 0 means don't
  588. include them.
  589.  
  590. IgnoreEMSDelete    0
  591. If this is 0, ESP control messages devoid of "human friendly" content
  592. are automatically deleted to avoid cluttering up your ESP mailboxes.
  593. If this is 1, those messages are preserved.
  594.  
  595. MoodWatchDeltaTime        5
  596. MoodWatchThresholdTime    1000
  597. These control background MoodWatch scanning of messages.
  598. MoodWatchDeltaTime is how long Eudora must be idle, in seconds, before
